Dalit groom attacked for mounting horse

Description

Ahmedabad: A dalit groom and his family were attacked during a wedding procession in Adpodra village in Himmatnagar taluka of Sabarkantha district. Some upper-caste residents in the village assaulted them with lathis for riding a horse. Three persons sustained injuries in the incident. The wedding was later conducted under police protection.

According to the district administration, police personnel have been deployed in the village and an investigation by a deputy superintendent of police is under way.
Chetan Waghela, 24, the groom, and his family started his 'Varghodo', or wedding procession, on April 16 evening. When they passed by the houses of some upper-caste community members, they were warned against letting the groom ride the horse or letting the band play. When the people in the procession did not comply with the demands, they were attacked.

Chetan's brother Pintoo, said: "When the procession reached near houses of the upper-caste community, they started abusing us and warned us of dire consequences. After having thrashed us on the road, they came to our houses and beat our family members again." Waghela said his family is being threatened despite the police presence.
P Swaroop, the Sabarkantha collector, said: "The incident occurred after some people of the scheduled caste community took out a wedding procession and some people from the Rajput community raised objections. This resulted in a clash between the communities." The situation is peaceful at present with sufficient police protection, Swaroop said.
